환경사의 관점에서 본 라구나(Laguna)에 대한 베네치아인의 인식과 담론의 등장
본 연구의 주된 관심은 환경사의 문제의식을 통해 라구나라는 자연환경을 베네치아인들이 어떻게 바라보았고, 그 안에서 일어났던 문제들에 대해 어떻게 대응했는지를 살펴보는 데 있다. 사실 라구나는 홍수 및 바람의 피해를 일으키고, 매립 및 담수화로 인해 모기가 발생하고 물이 썩어 그것을 매개로 질병이 발생하는 등 생활환경으로서는 부적합한 환경이었다. 그러나 15-16세기에 이르러 공화국 정부는 라구나의 환경 문제를 전담하는 공직을 설치하고, 라구나를 직접적으로 위협하던 요인인 하천의 관리와 통제를 주도했다. 이러한 정부의 적극적 개입의 배경에는 테라페르마의 확보 이후 라구나의 문제를 종합적인 시각으로 인식해 그것의 문제를 해결하기 위한 방안들을 제시했던 수로지리학자들의 담론들이 있었다.
Venetian People's Reflection and Discourses Concerning Venetian Lagoon from the Perspective of Environmental History
The general concern of this essay is, not only to describe Venetian people's reflection toward the natural environment of Venetian Lagoon, but also analyze their counteraction against the environmental problems with the perspective of Environmental History. In fact, Venetian Lagoon was not a suitable place to settle. Flooding and storm ruined the immigrants' lives by destroying the land and much of what they worked to build. Also, mosquitoes and malodorous water, which were increased by the ongoing reclamation and desalination, caused the outbreak of disease. By the 15-16th century, however, the Government of the Venetian Republic inaugurated officials to take charge of all environmental issues within the Lagoon and led the adjustment and control of the river system which threatened mainly the delicate natural balance of Lagoon. The background of this active intervention was involved in the discourses of Hydrologists, who have suggested solutions for the Lagoon's environmental problem with a systematic view thanks to the possession of Terraferma.
